What Sets Sophos Apart
Xstream Architecture
XGS firewalls split traffic between a hardware-accelerated FastPath and a single deep-packet inspection engine that handles TLS 1.3, IPS, app control, and antivirus together. There is no stacking overhead, so performance stays consistent with all protection modules enabled. Each SFOS update improves throughput without requiring a hardware upgrade.
Synchronized Security
When Sophos Intercept X detects a compromised endpoint, the XGS firewall automatically isolates that device before the threat can spread, with no manual intervention needed. Firewalls, switches, and access points share health status in real time through Sophos Central, so your network responds to active threats as a connected system rather than a collection of separate appliances.
One Console for Everything
Sophos Central brings your firewalls, access points, switches, and endpoint protection into one cloud dashboard. There is no separate management platform for each product line. Firmware updates, policy changes, and reporting all happen in one place, keeping your full security posture visible at a glance.
Value at Every Tier
Sophos prices the XGS Series to deliver a competitive cost per protected megabit at every tier. Trusted by more than 600,000 customers worldwide and rated 4.7 out of 5 in the Gartner Peer Insights 2024 Network Firewalls report. Each SFOS release adds new protections to your existing hardware without a forklift upgrade.
Sophos Frequently Asked Questions
Standard Protection covers the base firewall license plus Network Protection (IPS, application control, and SD-WAN routing) and Web Protection (URL filtering, DNS protection, and web application controls). Xstream Protection adds Zero-Day Protection for cloud sandboxing of unknown files, Enhanced Support for 24x7 access to Sophos technical support with advanced hardware replacement, and Central Orchestration for managing multiple firewalls from a single Sophos Central dashboard. Sophos recommends Xstream Protection for most deployments because it covers the broadest set of threats and includes the support subscription needed to keep firmware current.
No. The AP6 Series, including the AP6 420, AP6 420E, AP6 840, AP6 840E, and the outdoor AP6 420X, requires a Sophos Central Wireless subscription for management. AP6 access points cannot be controlled from the XGS firewall interface. The older APX Series can still be managed from the XGS firewall using the base license, but those models are end-of-sale. For any new wireless deployment, Sophos recommends the AP6 Series managed through Sophos Central.
Yes. All XGS models support multiple WAN interfaces with configurable link health monitoring for active failover or load balancing. The Xstream Protection bundle includes Xstream SD-WAN, which adds application-aware WAN path selection so business-critical applications always route over the best available connection. If one WAN link goes down, the firewall fails over automatically based on the policies you configure.
Most Sophos license keys are delivered by email within a few minutes of order processing during normal business hours. Orders placed in the evening or on weekends may not be processed until the following business day. If your order status shows Waiting on Code for more than one business day, contact our team directly and we will follow up with the distributor to expedite delivery.
The Sophos SD-RED, or Remote Ethernet Device, is a compact hardware appliance that extends your main office network to a branch location over an AES-256 encrypted tunnel. You enter the device ID into your XGS firewall, ship the SD-RED to the remote site, and plug it in. It automatically contacts your firewall and establishes a secure connection with no technical staff needed at the branch. The SD-RED 20 covers small offices and retail locations with four LAN ports. The SD-RED 60 adds PoE ports, higher throughput, and optional 3G/4G connectivity for larger branch offices.
