Sophos Access Point FAQ
No. The plain SKUs ship without a power adapter or PoE injector. Every AP6 model is powered over Ethernet. The 420, 420E, 420X, and 840 use 802.3at PoE+, and the 840E needs 802.3bt PoE++. Power each one with a Sophos PoE injector or a PoE-capable Sophos switch, which you can order alongside the access points.
You can manage a single AP through the free local web interface that comes with the hardware. To manage your whole fleet remotely and get firmware updates, Advanced RMA, and 24/7 support, each access point needs a Sophos Central support and services subscription. Features delivered through Sophos Central are only available with a valid AP6 support contract.
No. AP6 Series access points are managed only in Sophos Central or through the local web interface. They cannot be managed from any Sophos firewall. The older Wi-Fi 5 APX Series is the one that can run under a Sophos Firewall acting as a controller.
The Wi-Fi 6 models (420, 420X, and 840) use the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. The 6E models (420E and 840E) add a third radio for the 6 GHz band, which is less congested and a good fit for high-density areas where 6 GHz is available in your region.
The AP6 420X. It is IP67-rated for pole or wall mounting outdoors and uses external omnidirectional antennas, with optional 120-degree sector and 30-degree directional antennas available. The other four AP6 models are indoor units for desktop, wall, or ceiling mounting.
Real coverage depends on your layout, wall materials, and how many devices connect at once, so we size it with you. As a rule of thumb, the 2x2 models (420, 420E, 420X) suit standard-density spaces and the 4x4 models (840, 840E) handle higher client counts in busy areas. Tell us your square footage and device count and a certified rep will spec the right mix.
Every AP6 access point carries a limited lifetime hardware warranty. A per-AP support and services subscription adds Sophos Central management, firmware updates, Advanced RMA, and 24/7 multi-channel support.
Every AP6 model except the AP6 420 has at least one 2.5G interface for a faster uplink. Pair those models with a multi-gigabit Sophos switch to keep the wired side from becoming the bottleneck.
