Yes. Every current Meraki device, including firewalls, switches, access points, and teleworker gateways, depends on an active subscription to the Meraki cloud dashboard. The license is what enables configuration, firmware updates, and ongoing management, not just extra features.
MX refers to Meraki security appliances, the firewalls. MR refers to wireless access points. MS refers to switches. Each product line is licensed and ordered separately, even though all three are managed from the same dashboard.
The device enters a grace period after the license expires. If the license is not renewed before the grace period ends, the device stops passing traffic and falls out of the dashboard. We recommend starting the renewal conversation well ahead of the expiration date.
