filters all inbound and outbound messages before they reach users. It blocks spam, malware, phishing
links, and malicious attachments using a combination of reputation data, content analysis, sandboxing,

Microsoft 365 Defender provides a baseline level of filtering, but independent

Business email compromise is a form of fraud where an attacker impersonates a trusted

against BEC.
Email archiving captures and stores a tamper-proof copy of every inbound and outbound
email, independent of the mail server, for a defined retention period. It is required by regulations
including HIPAA, FINRA, SEC Rule 17a-4, and various state data retention laws. It is also essential
for legal hold and e-discovery situations where you need to produce email records quickly and prove
they have not been altered. Microsoft 365 retention policies are not a substitute because they can be
modified or deleted by administrators.
