Fortinet FortiSwitch FAQ

FortiSwitch is built for the Fortinet Security Fabric. Instead of logging into a separate switch management interface, your FortiGate firewall discovers and controls every FortiSwitch on the network automatically through FortiLink. Port security policies, VLAN assignments, PoE budgets, and firmware updates all flow from the FortiGate. For networks already running Fortinet firewalls, FortiSwitch removes a whole layer of separate administration.

Not strictly. FortiSwitches can run in standalone mode with their own local management interface, which works for simpler deployments where a FortiGate is not in the picture. The full value of FortiSwitch comes through FortiLink, Fortinet's protocol that connects the switch to the FortiGate. Fabric mode enables centralized policy enforcement, dynamic port authentication, and integrated threat visibility that standalone mode does not provide.

The 100 Series suits small offices and branch locations that need 8 to 48 ports with optional PoE in a compact desktop or wall-mount form. The 200 Series works well for mid-size businesses needing rack-mounted 24 or 48-port access switches. The 400 and 500 Series step up to enterprise access with 10G SFP+ uplinks for high-throughput wiring closets. The 600 and 1000 Series are built for distribution, aggregation, and data center core switching with 25G and 100G uplinks.

Several models across the 100 and 200 Series include PoE or PoE+ ports. PoE variants in the 100 Series, such as the 108F-POE, 124F-POE, and 148F-POE, deliver between 130W and 370W of total PoE budget. When managed through FortiGate, PoE power allocation can be prioritized per port from the same management interface used for security policies and VLAN assignments.

Yes. FortiSwitch connects to any FortiGate that supports FortiLink, which covers most models running FortiOS 6.0 and later. The standard approach is one dedicated FortiLink port on the FortiGate connected to the first switch, then additional units daisy-chained or in a ring topology behind it. Our pre-sales team can verify compatibility with your current FortiGate model before you place an order.

Yes. Our configuration service covers FortiSwitch as part of a Fortinet Security Fabric setup. Certified engineers can pre-configure VLAN assignments, FortiLink settings, and basic port security so the switch arrives ready to plug in. Configuration is available as a standalone add-on or bundled with a broader FortiGate configuration engagement.
