Do I need a Sophos firewall to use the AP6 840?

No. The AP6 840 is managed through Sophos Central, the same cloud console you use for your firewalls, switches, and endpoints. AP6 Series access points cannot be managed from a Sophos firewall at all, so you do not need one to run them. You will need a Sophos Central support subscription for each access point.

What is the difference between the AP6 840 and the AP6 840E?

Both are high-performance indoor access points. The AP6 840 is a dual-band Wi-Fi 6 unit covering the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. The AP6 840E adds a third radio for Wi-Fi 6E and the 6 GHz band, which opens up a cleaner, less congested space for high-density and high-throughput environments. If 6 GHz coverage matters to you, go with the 840E.

Does the AP6 840 need a license or support subscription?

Yes. To manage the AP6 840 in Sophos Central and get firmware updates, Advanced RMA, and 24/7 support, you need a Sophos Central support and services subscription for each access point. The hardware itself carries a limited lifetime warranty. Cloud features are only available with a valid support contract.

How do I power the AP6 840?

The AP6 840 draws power over Ethernet using the 802.3at PoE+ standard, up to 30W. The plain SKU ships without a power adapter or injector, so plan to power it from a Sophos PoE+ injector or a PoE-capable switch. If you are deploying several access points, a Sophos PoE switch keeps power and management on one console.

Is the AP6 840 an indoor or outdoor access point?

The AP6 840 is built for indoor use, with desktop, wall, or ceiling mounting and a plenum rating (UL2043) for in-ceiling installs. If you need to cover an outdoor area, the IP67-rated AP6 420X is the outdoor model in the AP6 lineup.

Can I manage the AP6 840 without the cloud?

Sophos Central is the primary way to manage the AP6 840, and it is what unlocks features like Active Threat Response across your access points and switches. There is also a local web interface for setting up and managing a single AP6 on site, which is handy for smaller deployments or initial configuration.
