Fortinet FortiMail FAQ

FortiMail is Fortinet's dedicated email security platform. It filters inbound and outbound email for spam, phishing, malware, ransomware, and business email compromise. It combines reputation-based filtering, deep content inspection, identity-based encryption, and optional sandboxing through FortiSandbox into one appliance or virtual machine.

Microsoft 365 Defender and Google Workspace filtering handle common threats reasonably well, but FortiMail is a dedicated gateway built for deeper inspection. It adds a second security layer in front of the cloud mailbox and catches advanced phishing, zero-day attachments, and targeted business email compromise attempts that generic platform filters often miss. For regulated industries or elevated threat profiles, this layered approach closes the gaps the platform alone leaves open.

For small businesses and branch offices with up to roughly 2,000 users, the FortiMail-200F is the right starting point. Mid-market organizations and managed service providers should look at the 2000E. Large enterprises with high message volumes and clustering requirements typically move to the 3000E or 3200E. If your team prefers virtual deployment, the FortiMail VM series covers seven capacity tiers from VM00 through VM32. Contact our engineers and they will match the right model to your user count, domain count, and message volume.

Yes. FortiMail works as an MX record-based gateway in front of any cloud mailbox platform, including Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace. Inbound messages pass through FortiMail for full inspection before delivery. Outbound email routes through FortiMail for DLP enforcement and sender reputation management. No changes to the mailbox platform itself are required.

Yes. FortiMail integrates natively with FortiGate, FortiSandbox, FortiAnalyzer, and FortiSIEM. Suspicious email attachments can be automatically submitted to FortiSandbox for behavioral detonation, and threat intelligence flows bidirectionally across the Security Fabric. Organizations already running FortiGate firewalls get the most from this integration because identified email threats propagate as indicators of compromise across the entire environment.

Yes. FortiMail includes built-in email encryption via S/MIME, TLS enforcement, and identity-based encryption (IBE). IBE is especially practical because it lets you send encrypted messages to recipients who do not have a certificate. The recipient retrieves the message through a secure web portal, so no software installation is required on the receiving end.

Hardware appliances run on dedicated processing tuned for email workloads, delivering consistent throughput that does not compete with other workloads on shared infrastructure. VM models run on standard hypervisors and let you use existing server capacity, scale by choosing a different VM tier, and deploy in environments where physical hardware is not practical. Both hardware and VM models run the same FortiMail operating system with identical feature sets.

Yes. Our certified Fortinet engineers offer configuration services for FortiMail. We set up anti-spam and anti-phishing policies, outbound DLP rules, email encryption settings, and domain routing before the unit leaves the warehouse. Remote deployment assistance and seven days of post-deployment support are included so your team is not troubleshooting alone at go-live.
