Without an active subscription, the appliance continues routing traffic but its ability to detect new threats degrades as signatures go stale. What is the difference between a UTM firewall and a next-generation firewall?

Unified Threat Management (UTM) and next-generation firewall (NGFW) are two terms used to describe the same category of appliance, typically sold with different licensing bundles. Both inspect traffic at the application layer, enforce content policies, and rely on an active subscription to keep threat intelligence current. The practical distinction is usually which security services are included in the bundle and how deeply each vendor implements each layer. All six brands we carry offer both UTM and NGFW feature sets. Do I need an ongoing subscription with my firewall?

In almost every deployment, yes.
