No. You can manage the appliance directly from its on-box web console. Sophos Central adds a single cloud dashboard for group firewall management, cloud backups, scheduled firmware updates, zero-touch deployment, and cross-product reporting, which is useful if you run more than one site or device. Central Orchestration is included in the Xstream Protection bundle.

Purchased on its own, the appliance includes a limited hardware warranty, 90 days of vendor support, and three firmware updates. Adding a protection bundle or Enhanced Support unlocks unlimited firmware updates, 24x7 Sophos support, and a hardware warranty that stays active for the life of the license, up to five years.
