What GMS Did and What Replaces It
GMS to NSM: What You Need to Know
What GMS Provided
SonicWall GMS gave distributed enterprises and service providers a single console to
centrally manage SonicWall firewall, wireless, email security, and secure remote access
appliances. Core capabilities included policy configuration across thousands of nodes,
VPN deployment and consolidation, real-time monitoring with alerting, scheduled
configuration and firmware management, and compliance reporting. It was available as a
software install, hardware appliance, or virtual appliance.
Why SonicWall Ended GMS
GMS was designed for a generation of on-premises management infrastructure. As firewall
estates moved to include Gen 7 and Gen 8 appliances with SonicOS and SonicOSX, SonicWall
built NSM from the ground up to support both firmware generations, cloud-delivered
management, AI-driven insights, and multi-tenancy for MSPs. GMS licenses reached Last
Day Order on October 1, 2025, and SonicWall is directing all customers to NSM for
ongoing management.
NSM: The Direct Replacement
NSM delivers centralized policy management, zero-touch deployment, real-time monitoring,
and compliance reporting for the full SonicWall firewall estate. It supports Gen 6
firewalls running SonicOS 6.5.x or higher and all Gen 7 devices running SonicOSX 7.0 or
higher. Cloud (SaaS) and on-premises deployment options are available. Basic firewall
management is included with firewall support subscriptions at no additional charge, with
paid NSM tiers adding extended reporting and log analytics.
How to Start the Transition
Our team can review your current GMS deployment, map your node count and feature
requirements to the right NSM license tier, and walk you through the migration steps.
NSM on-premises runs on VMware ESXi, Hyper-V, KVM, and Azure. NSM SaaS requires no
infrastructure. Both options are available through Firewalls.com with the same PO and
Net 30 billing your organization uses today.
Ready to move to NSM?
NSM Essential and NSM Advanced are both in stock and available today. View the full NSM
product page for licensing details, deployment options, and feature comparisons, or contact
our team for a migration assessment tailored to your GMS node count.
No. SonicWall GMS reached its Last Day Order on October 1, 2025. New
licenses, node upgrades, and renewals are no longer available for purchase through
any channel. SonicWall Network Security Manager (NSM) is the official replacement
and is fully available.
SonicWall Network Security Manager (NSM) is the direct replacement
for GMS. NSM provides centralized firewall management, zero-touch deployment,
real-time monitoring, compliance reporting, and AI-driven insights for the full
SonicWall firewall estate. It is available as a cloud SaaS service or as an
on-premises virtual appliance running on VMware ESXi, Hyper-V, KVM, or Azure.
SonicWall has not announced a specific end-of-support date for GMS
software already in production. However, with no new licenses or renewals available,
organizations should plan their migration to NSM. The longer GMS runs without a
support contract, the greater the risk of running unpatched management software.
Contact our team for a migration assessment.
GMS was node-based, requiring a separate license per managed
appliance. NSM SaaS includes basic management at no additional cost for firewalls
with active support subscriptions. Paid NSM tiers (Essential and Advanced) add
extended reporting periods and log analytics. NSM on-premises uses a node-based
license model similar to GMS, starting at a five-node base with add-on packs.
NSM supports SonicWall Gen 6 firewalls running SonicOS 6.5.x or
higher, and all Gen 7 devices running SonicOSX 7.0 or higher. Supported platforms
include the NSsp, NSa, TZ, and SOHO series. NSM currently manages firewalls and the
switches and access points connected to them; it does not manage SonicWall email
security appliances.
