The SonicWall NSv is a virtual firewall that delivers the same next-generation security capabilities as SonicWall physical appliances, but runs entirely in software on popular hypervisors and public cloud platforms. NSv models include the NSv 270, NSv 470, NSv 870, and NSv XS, and each runs SonicOS with full support for deep packet inspection, TLS decryption, application control, content filtering, and Capture ATP sandboxing.

SonicWall NSv firewalls are supported on VMware ESXi, Microsoft Hyper-V, Linux KVM, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). This broad platform support makes NSv a practical choice for organizations running workloads across multiple cloud environments or transitioning from on-premises infrastructure.

The three models scale in throughput and connection capacity. The NSv 270 supports up to 500 SSO users, 6 Gbps firewall throughput, and 125,000 max DPI connections, making it suitable for small businesses and branch offices. The NSv 470 handles up to 10,000 SSO users, 9 Gbps throughput, and 1,500,000 DPI connections for mid-market environments. The NSv 870 is the enterprise model with up to 15,000 SSO users, 14 Gbps throughput, and 2,000,000 DPI connections for large hybrid cloud deployments.

Yes. SonicWall NSv firewalls are fully supported by SonicWall Network Security Manager (NSM), the cloud-based unified management platform. NSM lets you manage physical and virtual SonicWall firewalls from a single dashboard, push policy changes across all sites, and generate compliance reports, which makes NSv ideal for organizations that already manage a fleet of SonicWall hardware.

No. The SonicWall NSv is a purely software-based firewall and does not require any dedicated SonicWall hardware. It runs as a virtual machine on your existing hypervisor or public cloud subscription. The only requirement is that the underlying host meets the minimum compute and memory specifications for the NSv model you deploy.

SonicWall NSv firewalls are licensed like physical SonicWall appliances. The base appliance license activates SonicOS on your virtual machine. Security service subscriptions such as Advanced Gateway Security Suite (AGSS), Capture ATP, Content Filtering Service, and Gateway Anti-Virus are purchased separately and renewed annually or on multi-year terms.
