Fortinet Wireless Firewall FAQ
A Fortinet FortiGate Wireless Firewall, sold under the FortiWiFi product name, is a compact desktop appliance that combines a full FortiGate next-generation firewall with a built-in Wi-Fi access point. One device handles routing, deep packet inspection, VPN, SD-WAN, and wireless connectivity for the office. Everything runs through a single FortiOS interface, so there is no need for a separate wireless controller or a second management console.
The three models scale in throughput and user capacity. The FWF-30G is sized for small offices up to 25 users. The FWF-50G handles growing offices of 25 to 50 users with more headroom for concurrent sessions and inspection workloads. The FWF-70G and 71G step up to medium branch environments of 50 to 100 users and add dual-radio Wi-Fi 6E for faster wireless throughput. The 71G additionally includes PoE ports for powering IP phones or cameras without a separate switch.
Yes, for most small and medium offices. The built-in radio covers a typical open-plan floor without additional hardware. For larger spaces with multiple rooms or high device density, the FortiWiFi can serve as the security gateway while FortiAP units extend wireless coverage, all managed from the same FortiOS console. No separate wireless controller is required in either configuration.
FortiWiFi firewalls use the same FortiGuard subscription stack as wired FortiGate models. Fortinet offers bundled SKUs, including 360 Protection, Advanced Threat Protection, and Unified Threat Protection, that combine IPS, antivirus, web filtering, DNS filtering, and application control. FortiCare hardware support is purchased separately or as part of the bundle. Our team will match the right subscription bundle to your compliance requirements and existing renewal schedule.
Yes. FortiWiFi runs FortiOS and integrates with FortiManager for centralized policy management across firewall rules, wireless settings, and SD-WAN overlays. FortiCloud is also available for smaller deployments that prefer a cloud-managed approach without an on-premises management server. Both options give you a unified view of all your locations from a single console.
Yes. FortiAP access points can be added and managed directly from the FortiWiFi unit without a separate wireless controller. The FortiAP controller function is built into FortiOS. This makes it straightforward to extend coverage to additional floors, conference rooms, or outdoor areas without replacing your security gateway or adding a dedicated controller appliance to the rack.
