Wi-Fi 6 Radio Performance
The MR86 delivers up to 2,402 Mbps on the 5 GHz band and 1,148 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz band for a combined aggregate of approximately 3.5 Gbps. The 4x4:4 MU-MIMO configuration handles four simultaneous spatial streams, and OFDMA subdivides each channel into smaller resource units so the AP serves more clients per transmission without making them wait for a clear channel. Dense outdoor environments with dozens of concurrent mobile devices are where the MR86 is built to shine.
IP67 Outdoor Enclosure
The MR86 carries an IP67 ingress protection rating, meaning it is fully sealed against dust and can withstand submersion in up to one meter of water for 30 minutes. The enclosure is tested for shock, vibration, humidity, and extreme temperatures, making it suitable for loading docks, rooftops, open-air stadiums, transit hubs, and industrial yards. A single multigigabit Ethernet port with 802.3at PoE+ handles both data and power through one outdoor-rated cable run.
Dedicated Security and Scanning Radio
A third radio operates independently of the two client-serving radios to perform continuous WIDS/WIPS monitoring, rogue AP detection, and automated RF optimization across both bands simultaneously. Because this radio never has to pause to serve clients, it provides full-time wireless intrusion protection without affecting the throughput available to users. A fourth integrated radio handles Bluetooth Low Energy scanning and beaconing for location services and asset tracking.
Meraki Cloud Management
The MR86 is managed entirely through the Meraki Dashboard, Cisco's cloud platform for unified wired and wireless management. Configuration templates push SSIDs, VLAN assignments, RF channel plans, and security policies to any number of MR86 units simultaneously. Zero-touch provisioning means a new unit ships to a remote site, is mounted and connected, and comes online with its full configuration automatically without a technician present. Firmware updates roll out on a defined schedule with no manual intervention.

Real-world throughput depends on client device capabilities, distance from the AP, interference, and the number of concurrent users. In a well-designed outdoor deployment with Wi-Fi 6 client devices, you can expect effective throughput well above what prior-generation outdoor APs could deliver, particularly in high-density scenarios where OFDMA's ability to serve multiple clients per transmission cycle has the most impact.
The MR86 hardware requires an active Meraki Enterprise or Advanced license to connect to the Meraki Dashboard. Without an active license, the AP cannot be managed or configured. Licenses are sold as annual or multi-year subscriptions per access point. The Enterprise license covers core management, security, and analytics features. The Advanced license adds additional AI-driven RF optimization and enhanced application visibility. The MR86 is powered by 802.3at PoE+ (30W), which is the most common PoE standard supported by enterprise switches. Standard 802.3af (15.4W) is not sufficient. If your switches support 802.3at on the ports you plan to use, no PoE injectors are needed. If you are running the MR86 on PoE-only ports or budget switches with lower wattage, a PoE+ injector at each unit is required. Yes. The MR86 connects to any 802.3at PoE-capable switch and communicates with the Meraki Dashboard over standard internet connectivity, so it does not require Meraki switches or security appliances to function. However, the deepest integration, including cross-product visibility, unified policy enforcement, and single-dashboard management of wired and wireless infrastructure, is available when pairing MR86 units with Meraki MS switches and MX security appliances.
