Barracuda Load Balancer ADC FAQ

A basic load balancer routes traffic across servers at the network layer. The Barracuda Load Balancer ADC operates at Layers 4 through 7, meaning it can inspect HTTP headers, route requests based on URL paths or cookies, and enforce application-layer security rules. It also handles SSL offloading, application acceleration, and server health monitoring, so your backend servers spend their cycles on application logic instead of encryption overhead.

The 340 is a fit for small offices and branch locations with up to 35 servers and 1.2 Gbps of traffic. The 440 handles growing web teams with up to 50 servers and 2 Gbps throughput. The 540 is built for mid-size data centers needing up to 100 servers and 4 Gbps. The 640 covers high-traffic production environments managing up to 250 real servers at 5 Gbps. Our team can help you size the right model based on your server count, peak concurrent sessions, and SSL volume.

Yes. The Barracuda Load Balancer ADC includes integrated WAF capabilities that protect web applications from OWASP Top 10 threats, SQL injection, cross-site scripting, and other common attack vectors. You get Layer 7 application security built into the same appliance handling your load balancing and SSL offloading, without adding a separate WAF in-line.

Yes. All four hardware models support active-passive and active-active HA clustering. Configuration and session state synchronize between the pair so failover is transparent to end users. If one appliance loses power or a network link, traffic moves to the standby unit without dropping active sessions.

SSL offloading moves the work of encrypting and decrypting HTTPS traffic from your backend servers to the Load Balancer ADC. That frees CPU cycles on your application servers so they handle more requests with the same hardware. The 340 processes 4,000 SSL transactions per second, the 440 handles 6,000, the 540 handles 15,000, and the 640 handles 30,000, so there is a model sized to your certificate volume.

Yes. Barracuda offers the Load Balancer ADC Vx for VMware, Hyper-V, and KVM hypervisors, as well as deployments on AWS and Azure. The Vx line uses the same management interface as the hardware appliances. If you are running a hybrid environment, you can manage hardware and virtual instances together.

Not sure which Barracuda Load Balancer ADC is right for you?

Tell us your peak concurrent sessions, the number of backend servers you need to balance, and whether SSL offloading or WAF is a hard requirement. A certified engineer will recommend the right model and walk you through licensing options in one call.
