Barracuda Backup Server FAQ

Barracuda Backup is a hardware appliance that sits on your network and backs up files, servers, and virtual machines to local storage. Once the local backup completes, it automatically replicates to Barracuda's secure cloud, giving you an offsite copy without managing a second physical location. The appliance and cloud replication are managed from a single web-based console.

Yes. An active Barracuda Backup subscription includes unlimited cloud storage in Barracuda's data centers. There are no per-gigabyte fees for cloud replication. You can replicate everything stored on the appliance without managing cloud storage quotas separately.

LiveBoot lets you spin up a virtual machine directly from a backup stored on the Barracuda appliance or in the Barracuda Cloud, without waiting for a full restore to physical hardware first. If a server fails, your team can have the workload running in a virtual environment within minutes while permanent recovery proceeds in the background.

Barracuda Backup supports Windows and Linux servers and workstations via an agent, and VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V via agentless backup. NAS devices are covered through CIFS and NFS share backup. Physical and virtual environments are managed under a single subscription.

Backup data is stored with immutability so ransomware on your network cannot encrypt or delete historical recovery points on the appliance. The cloud copy provides a second independent target that sits outside your local network entirely. If ransomware hits, you restore from the last clean recovery point rather than negotiating or paying a ransom.

Yes. Barracuda Backup supports site-to-site replication where one appliance sends data to a second Barracuda appliance at a different physical location. The Backup Server 190 operates as a sender only. The 290 and above support both sender and receiver roles in a site-to-site pair.

Both models provide 2TB of usable storage. The 290 ships in a 1U rack-mount enclosure and installs cleanly alongside other equipment in a server rack. The 295 ships in a compact desktop enclosure for offices that do not have or need a rack. Backup capacity and subscription features are the same on both.

Start with how much data you need to protect on-site. Barracuda publishes a recommended environment size for each model, which is roughly half of the usable on-disk capacity to leave room for deduplication and growth. The 190 covers environments up to 500GB, the 290 and 295 cover up to 1TB, the 390 covers up to 2TB, the 490 covers up to 4TB, and models from the 690 up handle larger data sets. Contact a Firewalls.com engineer and we will size the right appliance and subscription tier for your actual environment.
