PoE Power Delivery
Power over Ethernet lets a single cable deliver both data and power to access points, IP cameras, VoIP
phones, and IoT devices, eliminating the need for local power outlets at each endpoint. PoE+ (802.3at)
delivers up to 30W per port and covers most access points and cameras. PoE++ (802.3bt) handles
higher-draw devices like PTZ cameras and next-gen Wi-Fi 6 APs.
VLAN and Network Segmentation
Managed switches let you divide a single physical network into multiple logical segments using VLANs,
isolating guest Wi-Fi traffic from internal systems, separating IoT devices from workstations, and
grouping servers into their own broadcast domain. Segmentation limits the blast radius of a breach and
simplifies compliance for PCI, HIPAA, and similar frameworks.
Stacking and Redundancy
Stackable switches connect together through dedicated high-speed backplane links and appear to the

An unmanaged switch plugs in and works immediately with no configuration. It is fine
for simple connectivity needs but offers no visibility or control over what is happening on the
network. A managed switch lets you configure VLANs, monitor port-level traffic, set QoS priorities,
enable spanning tree, and receive alerts when something goes wrong. For any business environment, a
managed switch is the right choice.
Power over Ethernet (PoE) delivers electrical power through standard network cable,
eliminating the need for separate power adapters at each device. If you are deploying wireless access
points, IP cameras, VoIP phones, or door-access readers, you need PoE ports or a PoE injector at each
device. PoE+ (802.3at) is the most common standard and covers most APs and cameras. Count your powered
devices before buying to make sure the switch's total PoE budget meets your needs.
A Layer 2 switch forwards traffic based on MAC addresses and operates within a single
network segment. A Layer 3 switch adds IP routing capability, meaning it can route traffic between
VLANs internally without sending that traffic to a separate router or firewall. Layer 3 switching
reduces latency for inter-VLAN traffic and is recommended for larger networks with multiple segments
that need to communicate with each other at high speed.
The switch connects to the firewall's LAN port through a trunk link that carries all
your VLANs. The firewall handles inter-VLAN routing and applies security policies between segments. If
you purchase a switch from the same brand as your firewall, the management integration is native and
you can manage both from the same dashboard. Our configuration service handles the full setup,
including VLAN tagging, trunk configuration, and firewall policy updates, for a flat fee.
Count every wired device you need to connect today, then add 20 to 30 percent for
future growth. Include workstations, access points, IP cameras, phones, printers, and servers.
Remember that some of those ports will be PoE ports. Common sizes are 8, 16, 24, and 48 ports. If you
exceed what one switch can handle, stackable models let you add capacity without replacing the core
unit.
